Untravel Receives NEH Grant for "Murder at Harvard Mobile"
Monday, 01 September 2008

Hello out there, we just got some fantastic news. We have been selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities to receive a Digital Humanities Startup Grant: http://www.neh.gov/whoweare/cio/odhfiles/sug.awards.apr.2008.deadline.pdf. We are pretty psyched to have been chosen as one of 20 receipients from hundreds of applicants for this initial grant which may lead to a larger follow on grant. One of the program's goals is to spark "innovative uses of technology for public programming and education utilizing both traditional and new media." Our project was the only one that brought together a for-profit and non-profit business to tell a particular story, which might scintilate the documentary film community. We will be converting a 60 minute PBS documentary "Murder at Harvard" into a walkable experience in the Beacon Hill neighborhood where it is set. See http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/murder/.

Murder at Harvard Mobile DVD

The film goes through the specific events surrounding the murder of George Parkman, the richest man in Boston, by a Harvard Professor of Medicine in the 1850's. The case turned into the OJ Simpson trial of the 19th century and was the first use of "circumstantial" and forensic evidence (his remaining teeth!) to convict a man. The story transpires in a very tight geography, so it makes it a prime test for the re-use of public programming in a fresh, location-based, and potentially remunerative fashion. There will be a new category created for our blogs on this project called "Murder at Harvard Mobile?"
