Adobe MAX 2008

Summary

Introduction to the distributable player solution
The distributable player solution enables developers to create rich applications for the latest version of Adobe Flash Lite and directly distribute their content to millions of open OS smartphones, providing a better on-device user experience. Challenge
• Create a mobile guide for the Adobe MAX 2008 conference highlighting session and event information as well as compelling interviews with key players in the conference.
• Develop the mobile guide in parallel with the distributable player solution team's development of the Flash Lite 3.1 distributable player, helping Adobe QA the product and troubleshoot during development.
• Produce two versions of the application: one that would run in Flash Lite 3.0, and one that would run in 3.1 to allow for distribution to the greatest range of phones possible while the Distributable Player was still in development.

Solution
Untravel worked with the distributable player solution group at Adobe to create a multimedia guide that allowed attendees to quickly browse the hundreds of sessions, events, and workshops at the conference. The guide also had short speaker videos linked to the session and workshop details. All of this was integrated into a lively Flash application hosted by the Conference mascot, Max. The content was delivered via website (http://adobe.untravelmedia.com), mobile web, and kiosks at the conference.

Result
The Adobe MAX 2008 guide was popular among conference visitors and attracted over 400 downloads during the three-day conference. The guide successfully utilized the distributable player technology; able to be packaged and delivered over the air to mobile phones with Flash Lite 2.1 and higher. The guide was also featured in Adobe’s application store, AppZone. Untravel Media was invited to write an article on the Adobe Developer Connection website entitled “Advancing mobile storytelling with Adobe's distributable player solution.” The article is a technical/case study article on the craft of mobile storytelling and how new mobile technologies from Adobe are augmenting the video capapbilities and distribution of these stories.

About the Client

Adobe revolutionizes how the world engages with ideas and information. The company's award-winning technologies and software have redefined business, entertainment, and personal communications by setting new standards for producing and delivering content that engages people anywhere at anytime.

Adobe's annual conference, Adobe MAX, is an experience unlike any other — an opportunity to connect with thousands of designers, developers, partners, executives, and Adobe staff for education, inspiration, and community. Year after year, the greatest minds in Adobe technology gather together to attract thousands of designers, developers, and business decision makers to the Adobe MAX conference. MAX is an experience unlike any other — an opportunity to connect with thousands of designers, developers, partners, executives, and Adobe staff for education, inspiration, and community. Groundbreaking technology announcements and developments are made and announced to the public through a series of keynote speakers. 2008 was an exciting year for mobile technology with the introduction of the distributable player solution as well as other advancements in Adobe technology such as the Open Screen Project, a collaboration of various mobile companies to span information and data across all platforms – desktop computer, mobile phone, handheld PC, television, etc.

Adobe challenged Untravel with not only creating a compelling and informative mobile guide to match the energy of the conference, but also to build the guide using never-before-seen technology allowing the application to be packaged onto more Flash Lite mobile phones than ever before!

Our Process

Technology Solution
The application was made available to all phones supporting the Adobe distributable player (Flash Lite 2 and 3 phones) Users could access the tour via desktop computer, mobile phone, and mobile text message with a download link. The application was downloaded, installed, and launched in one click.

Developing the mobile conference guide for Adobe MAX presented a great opportunity to take advantage of the latest improvements to Flash Lite. Because our team was developing the mobile guide in parallel with the distributable player solution team's development of the Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player, we committed to producing two versions of the application: one that would run in Flash Lite 3.0, and one that would run in 3.1. The somewhat bittersweet consequence of this approach was that we were able to experience first-hand the various pitfalls of Flash Lite 3.0, and how the new Distributable Player has improved upon them.

Our Research

Untravel worked closely with the Flash Lite marketing team over the course of six months to develop one of the first implementations of the distributable player for Adobe's 2008 MAX Conference in San Francisco. Untravel conducted constant research and testing during the development of this application to scan for bugs in the distributable player and its compatibility with various mobile phones. Together, Adobe and the distributable player team were able to successfully develop an application compatible with Flash Lite phones of different operating systems, screen sizes and screen orientations.
